Convention Corner
Do you know Mackinac Island’s original name and where it came from? Native Americans traveling the Straits region believed that the island resembled the shape of a turtle’s back, so they named it Michilimackinac, which means Land of the Great Turtle.
At this year’s 110th Annual Convention, you can experience the Land of the Great Turtle for yourself while you enjoy a horse-drawn carriage ride around town. There are no motorized vehicles allowed on the island, but there are more than 500 horses and hundreds of bikes to choose from to get around the island.
While attending Convention, don’t miss the opportunity to sit on the world’s largest porch—the Grand Hotel’s front porch measures in at 660 feet!
This year’s Convention is a “can’t miss” event! Some of exciting things we have planned for Convention include our keynote speakers—the “three Daniels”—Daniel Gilmartin (Wednesday), Daniel Pink (Thursday), and Daniel Mulhern (Friday). League Executive Director Dan Gilmartin will discuss the League’s public policy initiative and the importance of creating a “sense of place” in the 21st century. Author Daniel Pink will discuss his ideas of the new era being led by creators and empathizers (the right-brained thinkers), and how to best utilize those skills within your organization. Michigan’s First Gentleman, Dan Mulhern will share his leadership wisdom as he discusses public servants as public leaders.
Each day promises networking and learning opportunities for everyone. On Wednesday there are the Pre-Convention Sessions, High Tea at the Grand with the Michigan Women in Municipal Government (MWIMG), and evening vendor receptions.
On Thursday, come out and show your community pride by participating in the Parade of Flags. Join in the spirited competition for the Community Excellence Awards by voting for the best community project out of the seven regional finalists. Visit the Fall Expo to meet with exhibitors offering products and services geared toward Michigan local government. Network with your peers during lunch, and during the Foundation silent auction and boat cruise.
On Friday, enjoy the general sessions, presentations, and lively concurrent sessions. Put on your best and your dancing shoes for the awards banquet and reception that celebrate excellence in government with the presentation of the League’s prestigious awards for Honorary Life Membership, Special Awards of Merit, Distinguished Achievement Awards, and Elected Officials Academy presentations.
On Saturday, join us for the closing breakfast, some encouraging words of wisdom, and find out which region had what it takes to take home the Community Excellence Award Cup!
Register now for the early bird rates. See you on the Island in October!
