Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Annexation
Question:
Our County Board of Commissioners recently approved two annexations
for our general law village. We notified the Michigan Department of Transportation,
Michigan Department of Treasury, and the Secretary of State (Office of
the Great Seal). Have we forgotten any agency or department?
Answer:
Please refer to the League's One-Pager
Plus on annexation procedures in general law villages.
According to the GLV Charter (MCL 74.6), which outlines annexation procedures,
the county clerk notifies the village clerk and the Secretary of State.
However, as a practical matter, it is advisable that the affected village
notify Michigan Department of Transportation (because of state-shared
gasoline tax revenue, aka Act 51 monies), the Michigan Department of
Treasury (for tax revenue changes), and the Office of the Great Seal
(as the official repository of all boundary information and changes).
