America's Promise

The Alliance for Youth

America’s Promise, led by General Colin Powell, is a nationwide initiative to strengthen the character of America’s youth. Hundreds of communities across the country have committed themselves to their youth, pledging to meet the five promises of America’s Promise:

• Mentor: Ensure every child and teenager has an ongoing relationship with a caring adult.

• Protect: Supply safe places and structured activities during non-school hours.

• Nurture: Offer a healthy start, emotionally, physically and mentally.

• Teach: Provide an effective education that will lead to the development of a marketable skill.

• Serve: Allow youth to give back to their community through service.

Research has shown that when these assets are accessible, youth are less likely to engage in a wide range of negative behavior including alcohol abuse, tobacco and drug use, teen pregnancy, dropping out of school, domestic violence, and attempted suicide.

Michigan’s Promise
