Green Initiatives are critical for any community intending to be viable in today’s economy. To help community’s go green, the Michigan Municipal League has started the Michigan Green Communities Challenge. So far more than 75 Michigan communities from every corner of the state have signed up for this challenge – from Marquette to Troy. It’s one of the only programs in the nation designed to assist local governments (think cities, counties, townships, and villages) in getting millions of federal dollars through the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant program.
We already are seeing many of the members of our Green Challenge being awarded more than $2.5 million of these grant dollars, including Charlevoix, $50,000; Grand Blanc, $140,000; Gross Pointe Woods, $81,860; Flushing, $58,790; Highland Township, $173,833; Holland, $113,000; Huntington Woods, $104,000; Lathrup Village, $50,000; Lincoln Park, $30,748; Madison Heights, $124,061; Marquette, $274,379; Meridian Township, $50,000; Monroe County, $612,543; Oak Park, $127,148; Southgate, $113,957; Swartz Creek, $50,861; Troy, $250,000; Wayne, $88,124; and Williamston Township, $75,384.
This is truly a statewide effort by the MML that will have long-lasting impact on our state in years and decades to come.
