Michigan Prosperity Agenda: Economic Development and Entrepreneurship

Program Explores How to Make a Better Michigan

The Michigan Prosperity Agenda is a monthly radio show that challenges listeners to help make Michigan a better place to live, work and play by creating vibrant and prosperous local communities. It will air on News/Talk 760 WJR at 7 p.m. on the fourth Wednesday of each month throughout 2010. The first show aired in January.

The hour-long radio program is hosted by Dan Gilmartin, CEO of the Michigan Municipal League (the League). The show is sponsored by the League and the Michigan State Housing Development Authority (MSHDA).

On Oct. 20 we talked  to gubernatorial candidates Rick Snyder and Virg Bernero about their plans for revitalizing urban areas, public transit and encouraging entrepreneurs. These issues are vital to Michigan's economic recovery as one of these men leads our state for the next four to eight years.

Dan Gilmartin

Dan Gilmartin, executive director and CEO of the Michigan Municipal League, explains the large population losses experienced in some of Michigan’s largest cities and what community leaders are now trying to do to improve their cities.

Dan explains why Michigan communities are so important to our state’s future.

Rick Snyder

Rick Snyder is CEO, Chair of the Board and co-founder of Ardesta LLC, a venture capital firm located in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Snyder previously served as CEO and Chairman of Gateway, Inc. On July 21, 2009, Rick Snyder announced his intention to campaign for Governor of Michigan as a Republican in the 2010 election. Snyder won the gubernatorial primary to become the Republican nominee for Governor of Michigan.

Mr. Snyder talks about his vision for Michigan’s future and the role communities will play.

Virg Bernero

Virg Bernero is the current mayor of Lansing. Prior to serving as mayor, Bernero served as a legislative aide, an Ingham County Commissioner and as a member of the Michigan House of Representatives and the Michigan Senate. He is the Democratic nominee for Governor of Michigan in 2010. He also is a member of the Michigan Municipal League Board of Trustees.

Mayor Bernero explains his vision for Michigan’s future and the role communities will play.
