Former Minonimee City Attorney Robert Jamo Honored by Peers

Distinguished Municipal Attorney Award Given to Jamo by Michigan Association of Municipal Attorneys

LANSING, Michigan (November 6, 2019)—The Michigan Association of Municipal Attorneys (MAMA) has awarded the Distinguished Municipal Attorney Award to former Menominee City Attorney Robert Jamo.

Jamo was recently appointed by Governor Whitmer to the 95A District Court bench. Prior to that, he served for a number of years as the City Attorney for the City of Menominee. In that capacity, Jamo provided guidance and leadership to the staff and elected officials of the City of Menominee and its citizens. His leadership includes two stints as interim Menominee City Manager. He was nominated for the award by MAMA President John C. Schrier. The award was announced during MAMA’s Municipal Law Program Annual Meeting in Lansing, Oct. 17.

“His fairness, diligence, and demeanor will be missed by the city, but will be evident to people appearing before him in Menominee County District Court,” according to the award nomination letter for Jamo.

Jamo has been a loyal and helpful member of the Michigan Association of Municipal Attorneys having served on the Board since 2009, most recently serving as Vice President and Vice Chairman of the Michigan Municipal League’s Legal Defense Fund.

He was instrumental in encouraging educational opportunities for municipal attorneys practicing in the Upper Peninsula. In particular, he played a key role in the successful 2018 joint MML and Michigan Township Association program for municipal attorneys. Jamo could always be found at MAMA events, lending his support and insight.

In addition to his leadership in MAMA, Jamo is a member in the Marinette Wisconsin Bar Association and a member and past president of the Menominee County Bar Association. He also gives of his time and talents as a member and vice president of the Spies Public Library Foundation Board.

The Distinguished Municipal Attorney Award is given for outstanding contributions to the practice of municipal law on behalf of cities and villages throughout Michigan and acknowledges the highest level of professional accomplishment while also serving their colleagues through professional organizations such as MAMA and the International Municipal Lawyers Association.
