Hillsdale to Host Open House on Broad Street Development Direction

Technical help from Michigan Municipal League and MEDC's Redevelopment Ready Communities Program support planing

ANN ARBOR, Michigan – The City of Hillsdale will host a public conversation on the future of a vacant site on Broad Street. The city-owned parcel at 23-25 N. Broad Street will be the subject of a meeting on Wednesday, Oct. 9, at the Hillsdale Community Library. A team from the Michigan Municipal League and consulting firm Giffels-Webster are providing support to the city’s pre-development planning for the property as part of the Michigan Economic Development Corporation’s Redevelopment Ready Communities® (RRC) program.

The Broad Street property previously hosted a vacant, three-story building in severe disrepair, which the city demolished earlier this year. The city now owns the vacant lot. “We routinely field inquiries from businesses or residents looking for space downtown, and this could be an opportunity to meet some of that need,” said Hillsdale Zoning Administrator Alan Beeker. “But we need to hear from the community before we’re ready to hear from developers.”

The technical assistance team will provide the city with site planning and design services as well as financial modeling of potential development. The expected output is a request for qualifications (RFQ) package that can be used to market the site to developers, similar to the process recently used for Hillsdale’s Keefer House Hotel.

The meeting will be held from 4:30- 6:30 pm on Oct. 9, at the Hillsdale Community Library at 11 E. Bacon Street. Comments can also be provided to Beeker by email at
