Panel to Focus on Michigan's Broken Municipal Financing System

As Michigan looks to create greater economic opportunities, the state needs to assess how its system of municipal financing affects communities. A panel sponsored by the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation at the Mackinac Policy Conference will provide context on how – and why – Michigan got to this point and how change can create stronger, more vibrant communities moving forward.

The panel discussion featuring the Michigan Municipal League, local
government leaders and business officials will discuss reforming municipal finance in Michigan. The discussion – Not Open for Business: Why Disinvestment in Michigan Cities is Hampering Economic Opportunity – will take a deeper look into how local communities are funded. The event provides an opportunity for legislators, residents of Michigan and media to learn more about Michigan’s broken municipality system.

Wednesday, May 30, 2018
10:30–11:30 a.m.

Grand Pavilion, Grand Hotel
286 Grand Ave, Mackinac Island, MI 49757

The discussion will feature opening remarks by Ridgway White, President of the
Mott Foundation, and U.S Congressman Dan Kildee. It will be moderated by Doug Rothwell, President and CEO of Business Leaders for Michigan. Panelists include: Chris Coleman, Former Mayor, City of St. Paul, Minn.; Gordon Krater, Partner, Plante Moran; and Anthony Minghine, Chief Operating Officer and Deputy Executive Director, Michigan Municipal League.

The State of Michigan has been diverting more than $8.1 billion away from
local services to fund state operations since 2002. This is a discussion on comprehensive, multifaceted solutions for our ongoing needs.
