Media Room Michigan Agency for EnergyPress Release Nick Assendelft FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: April 16, 2018 Michigan Energy Office: Take the Michigan Green Communities Challenge to Move Toward Increased Sustainability at the Local LevelDeadline to enter the free competition is May 31LANSING, Mich. – The Michigan Energy Office (MEO) today said communities have until May 31 to take the Michigan Green Communities (MGC) Challenge, a contest that measures communities’ progress toward meeting their current and future energy needs. “Michigan Green Communities help local governments move toward a more sustainable future as they take action,” notes Anne Armstrong Cusack, executive director of the Michigan Agency for Energy, of which the MEO is part. “Communities benefit from collaboration with each other, learn from their peers, and promote innovative solutions. The MGC Challenge helps communities rise to the next level of sustainability.” Participation in the challenge is open to any local government and is free. Winners will be announced in September. Last year, MGC members completed more than 350 actions and reported over 200 metrics to make Michigan communities more sustainable. Examples of actions taken include conducting an energy audit and converting to energy efficient lighting. The MEO’s goals include encouraging energy waste reduction and environmental sustainability. It serves on the MGC steering committee. The Michigan Green Communities Challenge is sponsored by Michigan Green Communities, a network of local government and university staff who collaborate, through peer learning and information sharing, to promote innovative solutions and move sustainability initiatives forward at the local, regional, and state levels. This project is generously funded by a grant from the C.S. Mott Foundation through the Michigan Municipal League Foundation.
