FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: March 19, 2018

Michigan Municipal League to Launch 16/50 Project

Project aims to remove barriers to women serving at executive levels of local government

What: The Michigan Municipal League will be launching the 16/50 Project: Driving the Force of Female Municipal Managers. The 16/50 Project was developed to highlight and bridge the gap between the percentage of women in the state of Michigan (50.8 percent) and the percentage of women that hold positions as municipal managers (16 percent).

When:   10:10 a.m. Wednesday, March 21, 2018 (immediately following the opening general session of MML’s Capital Conference)

Where:  Lansing Center, 333 E. Michigan Ave, Lansing, Michigan. Expo halls AB. The news conference also can be viewed on Facebook Live on MML’s Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/MMLeague).

Who:    Catherine Bostick-Tullius, Michigan Municipal League Board President, Lapeer City Commissioner
Melanie Piana, League Board Vice President, Ferndale Councilmember
Patrick Sullivan, President of the Michigan Municipal Executives, Northville City Manager
Emily Kieliszewski, League Membership Engagement Specialist
Rebecca Fleury, Battle Creek City Manager

Why:   Despite filling roles in many areas of appointed and elected government, women lag substantially behind men when it comes to their representation in executive local management positions. With a focus on the unique skills and challenges that women bring to and face in the profession, the 16/50 Project will work to remove barriers for women seeking the highest level of the profession, provide exclusive professional development opportunities, and foster key opportunities for a new generation of female leaders.
