Grant to Support Master Plan for Veterans Park Campus, Hamtramck Stadium

Work for 25-acre area aims to improve youth access to after-school and sport programs; Second major announcement coming at event

(Note to media: This will be a highly visual event with numerous students and supporters expected to attend. The Hamtramck High School Cosmos band will also be playing prior to the start of the news conference. Both stadiums will be made available to news personnel wishing to take photos and do video.)

What:              The Michigan Municipal League Foundation is announcing an $807,200 grant from the Ralph C. Wilson, Jr. Foundation to create a master plan and community engagement process. This is viewed as a significant first step toward the renovation, maintenance, and activation of the 26-acre Veterans Memorial Park campus, which includes Keyworth Stadium and historic Hamtramck Stadium (one of just five Negro League home ballparks still in existence). This grant represents a major partnership between the City of Hamtramck and Hamtramck Public Schools. Specifically, the master planning work aims to increase the daily activity of the community’s children. A second major announcement related to the grant also will be made during the news conference.

When:             2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 19

Where:            Keyworth Stadium field (in heated tent), 3201 Roosevelt St., Hamtramck, MI 48212. The news conference also can be viewed as it happens on Facebook Live on the League’s Facebook page (

Who:               Dan Gilmartin, Michigan Municipal League executive director and CEO
                        Karen Majewski, Hamtramck mayor
Magdalena Srodek, Hamtramck Public School Board president
Gary Gillette, president, Friends of Historic Hamtramck Stadium
Sean Mann, Detroit City Football Club, co-owner and CEO
Student speakers - Amra Dzanic and Dashun Morris (Hamtramck 11th graders)

Why:               The goal of this master planning work for Veteran’s Memorial Park is to actively engage the community to identify resident needs and priorities to better support the children in the community. The City of Hamtramck has the highest housing density in the region, with many children living in homes on small lots with little access to sports and other physical activities. Research shows regular exercise by children leads to greater cognitive function, positive mental health, better educational outcomes, and lower healthcare costs overall. However, only 13 percent of children in Southeast Michigan get the recommended one hour of daily physical activity. Most children and their parents look to public facilities and school programs that offer organized teams or classes to play or participate in sports.
