FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: October 26, 2018

Michigan Black Caucus of Local Elected Officials Opposes SB 0924

The following statement is from Lois Allen-Richardson, President of the Michigan Black Caucus of Local Elected Officials, regarding Senate Bill 0924. Allen-Richardson is also a member of the Ypsilanti City Council.

“The Michigan Black Caucus of Local Elected Officials adamantly opposes Senate Bill 0924 and it’s attempt to legalize the creation of private police forces. These private police forces would be less accountable, have different standards than regular police and lessen community engagement. We echo concerns recently raised by the Michigan Association of Chiefs of Police, that this would be bad public policy. Under this proposed law, there would be nothing to prohibit an extremist group from forming its own private police force.”

For additional information contact Matt Bach, director of communications, at (734) 669-6317 (office) and mbach@mml.org.

MBC-LEO was created to provide a forum for its members to collaborate, network, coach, mentor, share information, and provide support to one another in the state of Michigan. The Caucus works in cooperation with the Michigan Municipal League (MML). Membership of MBC-LEO is comprised of local elected officials and municipal staff members and associates in the state of Michigan.
