Michigan Municipal League Foundation Announces Oct. 19 Scholarship Deadline

George and Judith Goodman Scholarship Available for High School and College Students

LANSING, Mich. – The Michigan Municipal League Foundation is relaunching the George and Judith Goodman Scholarship Fund to encourage Michigan high school and college students to pursue careers in local government.

George and Judith Goodman have a long-standing commitment to making sure that underrepresented people—including women and people of color—have the chance to pursue careers in public service.

“We want the scholarship to help create a pipeline of qualified individuals by increasing training and other educational opportunities that remove barriers to success,” George Goodman said. “Encouraging more diversity in our local leadership will mean better representation and, hopefully, better outcomes for communities around the state.”

George Goodman served as executive director of the Michigan Municipal League for 22 years before retiring and becoming the MML Foundation president until 2008. He also served as Ypsilanti mayor for more than a decade. Judith Goodman was the assistant dean of admissions and student services at the University of Michigan Business School before her retirement.

One scholarship of up to $1,000 will be awarded each year to a Michigan high school or college student pursuing a career in local government through a public policy or public administration undergraduate or graduate degree.

Scholarship applications will be accepted for consideration by the MML Foundation Board at mmlfoundation.org/scholarships. The deadline is Oct. 19. Financial need will be taken into consideration as will an expressed interest in pursuing a career with local government. The scholarship may be used for tuition and fees related to pursuing a degree.

Applicants must be Michigan residents and attending—or accepted to attend a Michigan college or university. Applicants are asked to write a minimum of 150 words on a topic relevant to the League’s mission and goals.

Applicants should explain why they believe it would be beneficial for them to receive the scholarship, including why and how the training will help them pursue a career in local government.

“The George and Judith Goodman Scholarship will help the MML Foundation advance the education of students interested in local government in a relevant and meaningful way,” said Pat Lockwood, MML Foundation chairwoman and the City of Fenton mayor pro tem. “We look forward to increasing the diversity of students who want to pursue careers in local government and public service.”

The Michigan Municipal League Foundation helps create and maintain vibrant communities in Michigan by funding placemaking projects and educating community leaders and advocates. We recognize that communities are economic drivers, so the Foundation plays a key role in connecting communities to opportunities to help them grow and thrive.
