Michigan Municipal League Promotes Long-Time Employee Shari Milliken

ANN ARBOR, Michigan – Long-time Michigan Municipal League employee Shari Milliken was recently promoted to the position of finance director.

Milliken has more than 15 years of financial management experience with a focus on not-for-profit finance and accounting. She started at the League in 1996 as an insurance accounting clerk and worked her way up through the ranks serving as an accountant, supervisor, controller and now finance director.

“Shari has been with the League for more than two decades serving the organization in a variety of roles,” said Dan Gilmartin, League CEO and Executive Director. “Promoting staff from within is important to our organization and I couldn’t be more pleased to have Shari as the League’s finance director.”

Prior to joining the League, Milliken worked out of state in the private sector. Milliken, who has an accounting degree from Cleary University in Ann Arbor, grew up in Pinckney and Garden City, Michigan, and returned to her home state when she was hired by the League.

“When I started working at the League I quickly realized that I loved working in the not-for-profit environment,” Milliken said. “I also really enjoy helping our members, fostering strong relationships and guiding the League’s finances into the future.”

As finance director, Milliken’s responsibilities include the financial management of the League and the Michigan Municipal League Foundation, including grant management. She also oversees financial activities for League-affiliated entities including the Michigan Municipal Executives, Michigan Association of Mayors, Michigan Women in Municipal Government, Legal Defense Fund, Michigan Association of Municipal Attorneys, and PROTEC.

Additionally, her responsibilities include the management of multiple budgets, audits, banking and investments, and she is the finance system administrator for the accounting and association management systems.

“While I’m a numbers person, my overall goal is to facilitate change by taking ideas and translating them into the results that the organization wants to see,” Milliken said. “I also hope to foster a culture of innovation among my staff by encouraging them to think differently and then translate those new ideas into the results that benefit the League and our members.”

For additional information contact the League’s Matt Bach, director of communications (810) 874-1073 (cell); (734) 669-6317 (office) and mbach@mml.org.
