Ypsilanti City Attorney Receives Sinclair Award for Exceptional Service

Michigan Municipal League Honors John Barr

LANSING, Michigan – The Michigan Municipal League has honored Ypsilanti City Attorney John Barr with the Jim Sinclair Exceptional Service Award. He received the recognition during the League’s annual Capital Conference Awards Gala March 21 in Lansing.

Barr is the current city attorney of Ypsilanti, having served in this position since 1981.

“Over his career, John Barr has truly distinguished himself as one of the top municipal law attorneys in our state,” said William Mathewson, who presented the award to Barr during Tuesday’s Awards Gala. Mathewson is the Michigan Municipal League’s general counsel.

Barr is a long-time member of the Michigan Association of Municipal Attorneys (MAMA). In 1993, he was awarded the Distinguished Municipal Attorney Award, and in 2008 he received the Association's highest award, the William L. Steude Ethics and Civility in Local Government Award.

He has been a major supporter of the Michigan Municipal League Foundation, serving on its board and offering a very generous matching gift challenge that allowed the Foundation to raise substantial funds for its programs. Barr has also been extremely helpful to the managers' association as it transformed from MLGMA to its new name and web presence of Michigan Municipal Executives (MME). In addition, he is very active in the Ypsilanti community, with the Boy Scouts of America, and numerous community organizations.

About the award: The Jim Sinclair Exceptional Service Award, first awarded in 2008, is a peer-nomination in honor and memory of Rogers City Councilmember Jim Sinclair, a tireless promoter of local government and fervent believer in education and training for elected officials. It is a tribute to Sinclair's legacy of personal dedication, passion and commitment to the League and its mission.
