Legislators, Local Officials Honored by Michigan Municipal League

Awards Gala Celebrates People Making a Difference

LANSING, Michigan — Multiple state and local officials were recently honored by the Michigan Municipal League for their ongoing support of Michigan communities.

Seven officials were celebrated during the Michigan Municipal League’s annual Awards Gala that took place Tuesday, March 21 in Old Town Lansing during the League’s annual Capital Conference.

“Leadership, innovation, and collaboration are the hallmarks of people who accomplish great things,” said League President Rosalynn Bliss, mayor of Grand Rapids. “During the Michigan Municipal League Awards Gala we were proud to celebrate the people who exercise those traits on behalf of Michigan communities. These are people who have played a major role in making Michigan a place we are all proud to call home.”
The award recipients were:

  • Rebecca Hopp, Ferrysburg mayor pro tem: Recipient of the Ambassador Award. This honor is given to Michigan Municipal League members who successfully complete all four levels of the League’s Elected Official Academy program.

  • Sen. Marty Knollenberg (R-Troy) and Rep. Robert Kosowski (D-Westland): Co-recipients of the League’s Legislator of the Year Award. Each year, the Legislator of the Year Award is presented to a few legislators for their instrumental actions in the Michigan State Legislature on behalf of local communities. These individuals are recognized for their efforts in the passage of legislation that will benefit local governments or fighting consistently to support local government.

  • Marcus Peccia, Cadillac city manager: Recipient of the Community Builder Award that honors individuals whose leadership creates positive community change. Through efforts such as encouraging civic engagement, supporting up-and-coming leaders, fostering good working relationships, and thinking strategically, they make their community a place where people truly love to live and work.

  • John Barr, Ypsilanti city attorney: Recipient of the Jim Sinclair Exceptional Service Award. This honor celebrates a person dedicated to public service who has shown passion and commitment to the League, enthusiastically supporting its mission and promoting its purpose.

  • Carol Shafto, former Alpena mayor; and Larry Nielsen, Paw Paw village manager: Both recipients of the Honorary Life Membership Award. First awarded in 1932, the Honorary Life Membership is the League's highest honor, reserved for the most active and inspiring leaders dedicated to the League and its mission.
