Dearborn Mayor Jack O'Reilly Receives Michigan Association of Municipal Attorneys 2016 Steude Award

MACKINAC ISLAND, Michigan (Sept. 15, 2016) — Dearborn Mayor and Michigan Municipal League Board President Jack O’Reilly received the 2016 William L. Steude Ethics and Civility in Local Government Award. It’s among the most distinguished awards bestowed by the Michigan Association of Municipal Attorneys (MAMA).

O’Reilly began his career as an attorney in Michigan in 1980 and has served as mayor for Dearborn since 2007. He is currently the Michigan Municipal League president. He has been an elected public servant for more than 23 years, including 17 years as the president of the Dearborn City Council. O’Reilly has consistently demonstrated his commitment to Dearborn neighborhoods and has promoted economic development through beneficial relationships with county, regional, state agencies, and corporations like Ford Motor Co., AK Steel, and Beaumont Health.

“Mayor O’Reilly is a true public servant of the highest integrity; I cannot think of anymore more deserving of this tremendous honor,” said U.S. Rep. Debbie Dingell, in a letter of support of O’Reilly’s nomination for the Steude Award. “I have worked with Mayor O’Reilly on many occasions and can vouch firsthand for his dedication and integrity. He works tirelessly on behalf of his community and has spearheaded a variety of initiatives, including promoting the region’s economic development as a member of the Michigan Economic Development Corporation’s Executive Committee.”

Dingell added O’Reilly is also an active member of the community and does extensive work with the local schools and community organizations.

“His work on behalf of the City of Dearborn has been instrumental in creating the thriving and vibrant community that exists today,” Dingell stated. “As a resident of Dearborn, I see the results of Mayor O’Reilly’s great work every day and am grateful for his service.”

O’Reilly has significant experience in regional, state, and federal levels of government. Over his long public service career, he has served as a Washington staff counsel and district director for U.S. Congressman John D. Dingell and a chief of staff in the Michigan State Senate. Before becoming Mayor, he was the executive director of the Southeast Michigan Community Alliance (SEMCA) from 1996-2007.

“During my tenure with the Michigan Municipal League board, I’ve always appreciated working with the MAMA organization on a range of issues affecting local governments,” O’Reilly said. “I am proactively supportive of MAMA on various legal initiatives. This is a humbling surprise and something that indicates colleagues truly appreciate collaboration on issues that are important to citizens of Michigan.”

O’Reilly is also active with the National League of Cities, Michigan Economic Development Corporation, Michigan Association of Mayors, State Bar of Michigan, Urban Core Mayors, Downriver Community Conference, Conference of Western Wayne, United States Conference of Mayors, and the Southeast Michigan Council of Governments.

A licensed Michigan attorney, O’Reilly holds Bachelor of Arts and Juris Doctor degrees from the University of Detroit, and also is an alumnus of Oakland University. He is a graduate of Dearborn’s St. Alphonsus High School. He and his wife, Christina, have three children and one grandchild.

The William L. Steude Award honors individuals for significant and tangible achievement in the field of local government ethics and civility. It is awarded to those who have earned the highest level of respect among colleagues. The award is dedicated to the memory of William L. Steude, former general counsel of the Michigan Municipal League and a good friend of the Michigan Association of Municipal Attorneys.

O’Reilly was presented the award by Big Rapids City Attorney Eric D. Williams on behalf of the MAMA Board of Directors during the Michigan Municipal League’s Board of Trustees meeting Wednesday, Sept. 14, on Mackinac Island. The meeting took place during the League’s 2016 Convention.
