Colleen Layton Receives Honorary Life Membership

Michigan Municipal League Celebrates Ann Arbor Resident and Long-Time Employee

LANSING, Michigan — The Michigan Municipal League honored long-time League employee Colleen Layton with an Honorary Life Membership during the League’s annual Capital Conference Awards Gala March 22 in Lansing.

Layton, an Ann Arbor resident, is currently the League’s director of policy development, but she started with the organization in January 1991 as a staff librarian, said League CEO and Executive Director Dan Gilmartin.

“Her diverse skill-set made her a valuable asset to the League and she would eventually become one of the directors on our leadership team,” Gilmartin said. “Her accomplishments and achievements at the League are vast and significant.”

Most recently, Layton played an instrumental role in developing two League books: The Economics of Place: The Value of Building Communities Around People and The Economics of Place: The Art of Building Great Communities. She is set to retire from the League later this year.

About the award: The Honorary Life Membership, first awarded in 1932, is the League’s highest individual honor, reserved for the most active and inspiring leaders dedicated to the League and its mission.
