Michigan Municipal League Responds to Legislature's Decision Not to Move Forward on OPEBS Reform at this Time

Lansing, Mich. – The following can be attributed to Chris Hackbarth, Director State and Federal Affairs, Michigan Municipal League:

“The Michigan Municipal League has long cited the need to address the high cost of retirement health insurance while maintaining options for health care for municipal retirees. We appreciate all the work that the Legislature and Speaker Cotter have done to explore the matter during the current term, but the complexity of the issue makes it difficult to thoroughly consider during the lame duck environment. For that reason, the League requested the House delay action on this proposal at this time and allow the opportunity to work with Gov. Rick Snyder, the incoming Legislature, and all of the relevant interest groups in the next term. “

Michigan Municipal League is dedicated to making Michigan’s communities better by thoughtfully innovating programs, energetically connecting ideas and people, actively serving members with resources and services, and passionately inspiring positive change for Michigan’s greatest centers of potential: its communities. The League advocates on behalf of its member communities in Lansing, Washington, D.C., and the courts; provides educational opportunities for elected and appointed municipal officials; and assists municipal leaders in administering services to their communities through League programs and services.
