FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Jan. 3, 2016

Local governments to hold news conference asking veto of SB 571

Who: Leaders of local government agencies of all sizes and types and other organizations
.
When: 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 5.

Where: Michigan Municipal League offices, 208 N. Capitol Ave.

What: The officials will express concerns about SB 571, which will prevent local officials from providing factual information to constituents regarding ballot issues within 60 days of an election. They will ask Gov. Rick Snyder to veto the legislation.

Why: Voters need factual information to cast knowledgeable votes in local elections, many required by state law. This legislation would limit that ability of local governments to provide that factual information at a time when news media coverage is increasingly limited, particularly in rural and suburban communities.

State law already prohibits local governments from advocating in these elections, with relatively few violations found compared to the number of elections held.

The bill is now before Gov. Rick Snyder.
