Seven Finalists Selected for Washtenaw County Administrator Position

Interviews Set for January 23

WASHTENAW COUNTY, Michigan – Nearly 30 candidates applied for the Washtenaw County Administrator job and seven finalists have been selected for interviews.

The Michigan Municipal League’s executive search service is coordinating the effort to replace County Administrator Verna McDaniel, who retired late last year. The position was posted in the fall and 29 candidates applied. The League thoroughly reviewed the applicants and prepared a report for the Commissioners, recommending seven top candidates. The report allowed the Commissioners to review the applications without candidates’ names identified. The Washtenaw County Commissioners decided to invite the top candidates for interviews. The interviews are scheduled for January 23 at the County Administration Building beginning at 8:30 a.m. and will be open to the public.

Here is a look at the finalists:

  • Muddasar Tawakkul is the director of compliance and purchasing with the Detroit Wayne Mental Health Authority. He worked for Wayne County for ten years, serving as assistant corporation counsel and director of purchasing. He holds a JD for the University of Detroit–Mercy.

  • Michael Rogers currently serves as the director of public works in Peoria, Illinois. He has previous experience as the director of the Wayne County Department of Public Services – Roads Division and the transportation planning coordinator with the Road Commission for Oakland County.

  • Tim Boland has been the city manager for the City of Steubenville, Ohio since 2014. He was also city administrator for the City of Pataskala, Ohio and economic development director for Delaware County, Ohio.

  • Robert Tetens has been the director of the Washtenaw County Parks and Recreation Commission since 2001. He held numerous positions in Washtenaw County from 1978 to 1985 and was also the executive director of the Ann Arbor-Ypsilanti Urban Area Transportation Study Committee.

  • Gregory Dill is the interim deputy administrator with Washtenaw County. Dill has served the county as the director of infrastructure management, director of facilities management, and the director of administrative operations with the Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office.

  • Roy Witherow is the assistant village manager with Lake Zurich, Illinois. He previously was the village manager of Lyons, Illinois, and the deputy county administrator with McHenry County, Illinois.

  • Jose Reyes Jr. is the chief operations officer with the Detroit Employment Solutions Corporation. He also has been the deputy director of the City of Detroit Workforce Development Department, and the chief information officer for the Detroit–Wayne County Mental Health Agency.

The County Administrator is appointed by a nine-member commission and works with all 22 county departments. The commission is seeking an experienced professional with a proven record of transparency and innovation. Minimum salary compensation is $150,000.
