Traverse City's "City Lot" Hosts Community Picnic, Invites Public Input and Ideas

Traverse City, MI — On Wednesday, September 16 from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m., the public is invited to attend a family-friendly Community Picnic at 500 West Front Street to share ideas about the future use and design of this Traverse City-owned property. This property, called City Lot, is located between Little Bohemia Restaurant and Oak Street off of West Front Street. The City Lot property includes the existing fire station, an adjacent office building, a parking area, an alley, open green space, and a portion of Kids Creek.

The Community Picnic event will feature an “open house” format. Community members will have an opportunity to explore the property at their own pace. Several stations will be set up to share information about specific areas of the property, site history, and to highlight some of the ideas that have already been offered by members of the public. Participants will have an opportunity to learn more about the project and to share their comments and ideas in writing. Those who attend can also get to know members of the local Project Design Team and the Steering Committee who are guiding the public engagement and site design process. This free event will also feature local food.

Traverse City’s City Lot property is one of seven places in Michigan that received a PlacePlans grant from the Michigan Municipal League in 2015. The purpose of the grant is to help the community design and plan for the area in a way that supports a strong sense of place. The PlacePlans are done with support from the Michigan State Housing Development Authority and Governor Snyder’s MIplace Partnership.

PlacePlans projects are unique in part due to their focus on public engagement. A community chalkboard was erected at City Lot a little over a month ago. People have been using the chalkboard to share their ideas and brainstorming uses for this public space. Community members have also shared ideas through the City Lot website and social media. In addition to the Community Picnic, City Lot project organizers will host an additional public gathering and feedback session regarding property designs and uses in October.
