FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Sept. 25, 2015

Former Ishpeming City Attorney Receives State and National Awards

David Savu Honored with Distinguished Municipal Attorney Award and IMLA's Longevity of Service Honor

MARQUETTE, Michigan (Sept. 25, 2015) – The Michigan Association of Municipal Attorneys (MAMA) recognized retired Ishpeming City Attorney David Savu for recently receiving two major awards from the profession.

Savu, who was Ishpeming city attorney from 1973 until retiring in 2014, received the Distinguished Municipal Attorney Award from MAMA during the group’s Upper Peninsula Fall Conference meeting Friday, Sept. 25, in Marquette. The MAMA officials also recognized Savu for receiving the James H. Epps III Longevity of Service to a Community Award from the International Municipal Lawyers Association (IMLA). The Epps Award will be presented to Savu Oct. 6 during the IMLA’s 80th Annual Conference.

The Distinguished Municipal Attorney Award was established to honor municipal attorneys who have reached the highest level of professional accomplishment in the representation of cities or villages, and contributions to other municipal attorneys through participation in and service to professional organizations such as the MAMA and the IMLA.

IMLA established the Epps longevity award to honor the memory of James H. Epps III by recognizing local government attorneys who have distinguished themselves by years of service to the same community. This award seeks to recognize those local government lawyers who have been able to persevere through changes in government over a period of at least 30 years and who have been active in the IMLA during all or a part of that career. This award is a milestone honor that recognizes the significant achievement of having the political and legal skills necessary to represent the same community for at least 30 years.
