St. Ignace Mayor Paul Grondin Honored for Service to Mayors Association, Communities

TRAVERSE CITY, Michigan — St. Ignace Mayor Paul Grondin was honored by Governor Snyder, the Michigan Association of Mayors and Michigan Municipal League this week for his years of service to the two organizations and to his community.

Grondin is currently president of the Michigan Association of Mayors (MAM) and his term will expire later this year. He also is not seeking re-election as mayor after serving in that role since March of 2006. He has been a member of the St. Ignace City Council since 2002 and an active member with the Michigan Municipal League for many years.

He was honored during a MAM breakfast meeting Thursday, Sept. 17, that took place during the League’s annual Convention in Traverse City.

“It’s quite an honor and this tells you a lot about the makeup of the Michigan Association of Mayors,” Grondin said. “All the people in this organization care about their communities fervently as I do about mine. This organization is only as successful as its members want it to be and I see a real good group of people right now that will continue to move the organization and our communities forward.”

To honor him, Grondin received two plaques of appreciation. One was from the Michigan Municipal League President Dick Bolen and Executive Director and CEO Dan Gilmartin thanking him for his “outstanding public service and dedication to tirelessly representing the City of St, Ignace.”

The other honor was a Special Tribute signed by Governor Rick Snyder and state Rep. Lee Chatfield and state Sen. Wayne Schmidt, who represent the St. Ignace area.

Bolen, Mayor Pro Tem of Wakefield and fellow “Yooper”, said Grondin has done an excellent job representing St. Ignace, the Upper Peninsula and the entire state during the past two years as MAM president.

“The board looked at Paul’s record of achievement over the last several years and his leadership in the past couple years as president of the Michigan Association of Mayors and we just felt his leadership certainly stands out and deserves this kind of award,” Bolen said.

Prior to serving on the St. Ignace city council, Grondin served two terms on the St. Ignace Area Schools Board of Education, in the capacity of trustee, treasurer, and president. He is a strong supporter of his city's many year-round activities which visitors enjoy participating in when visiting the City of St. Ignace.

Grondin was first elected president of the Michigan Association of Mayors in 2013 and previously was vice president of the organization.
