Traverse City's City Lot Project Launches, Invites Public Input

Traverse City, MI — Influence Design Forum (IDF) is collaborating with the Michigan Municipal League (MML) on an exciting placemaking project for 500 West Front Street: City Lot. City Lot encompasses a Traverse City-owned space: a natural, open space featuring Kids Creek, the existing downtown fire station and connected office building. This grant-funded placemaking initiative welcomes public input.

Traverse City is one of seven communities in Michigan that received a PlacePlans grant in 2015. The PlacePlans Grant Program is coordinated through the Michigan Municipal League to help communities design and plan for transformative placemaking projects. The PlacePlans are done with support from the Michigan State Housing Development Authority (MSHDA) and Governor Snyder’s MIplace Partnership.

In the west end of downtown Traverse City, several projects are underway to address issues such as pedestrian and motorized infrastructure, streetscapes, and poor connectivity. However, the area lacks a true destination or gathering space. The planning and design process will focus on the vacant city-owned parcel along Kids Creek (next to the Fire Station), but also will consider the entire property which includes the fire station and connected office building.

The City Lot project will gain momentum through the remainder of July and August. During this time, City Lot’s Steering Committee will be building awareness, support, and seeking input for the project through onsite demonstration, website and social media. A community chalkboard at City Lot was erected, which encourages people to write ideas and brainstorm uses for this public space.
