FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Dec. 9, 2015

John J. Rae Receives Michigan Association of Municipal Attorneys 2015 Steude Award

ANN ARBOR, Michigan (Dec. 9, 2015) — Long-time municipal attorney John J. Rae received the 2015 William L. Steude Ethics and Civility in Local Government Award. It’s among the most distinguished awards bestowed by the Michigan Association of Municipal Attorneys (MAMA).

Rae, who is now retired and lives in Canton Township with his wife Ann, was a municipal attorney spanning multiple decades, including city attorney in Midland from 1977-1995 and prosecuting attorney for Calhoun County in 1975-1976.

“John Rae was a leader in the development and adoption of local ethics policies and an advocate for municipal civil infraction legislation,” said MAMA President Clyde J. Robinson, Kalamazoo city attorney. “John’s quiet and studied approach to municipal legal issues served his municipal clients and their officials well and remains a model for the next generation of municipal lawyers.”

The William L. Steude Award honors individuals for significant and tangible achievement in the field of local government ethics and civility. It is awarded to those who have earned the highest level of respect among colleagues.

Rae is past president of the Michigan Association of Attorneys and past chair of the Public Corporation Law Section of the State Bar of Michigan. Rae’s daughter, Elizabeth Rae O’Donnell, is following in her father’s footsteps and is also an attorney representing community colleges and municipalities with the Cummings, McClorey, Davis & Acho law firm.

Rae received the award and was honored by his fellow attorneys during a ceremony Wednesday, Dec. 9, at the Michigan Municipal League’s office in Ann Arbor.

“I’m kind of overwhelmed,” said Rae. “I thought I’d been forgotten. It was very pleasant that they reached out to me over the transmission lines. I’m very pleased to receive this award.”

Steude Award nominees are an official or employee of a member municipality of the Michigan Municipal League, a member of the Michigan Association of Municipal Attorneys, or associated with local government. Recipients are selected by an awards committee comprised of the Board of Directors of the Michigan Association of Municipal Attorneys, and the president and the executive director of the Michigan Municipal League. The award is dedicated to the memory of William L. Steude, former general counsel of the Michigan Municipal League and a good friend of the Michigan Association of Municipal Attorneys.
