Festive Fridays in Allegan to Support Businesses, Entrepreneurs

Downtown Development Authority Hosts Events throughout December in Partnership with Michigan Municipal League

ALLEGAN, Michigan – The power of place is coming to life in Allegan this holiday season.

The City of Allegan and the Downtown Development Authority are partnering with the Michigan Municipal League to expand the city’s annual Festive Fridays December event series that showcases Allegan’s entrepreneurial spirit. The community is using the concept of placemaking to help spread the word about local businesses, artists, and entrepreneurs.

“Festive Fridays is an Allegan tradition of family-fun and celebration. We give visitors the historic, small-town holiday experience they’re looking for this time of year. We’re excited to get support from the League to let people know about the wonderful things happening in downtown Allegan and to celebrate the holiday season,” said Allegan City Manager Robert Hillard. “We are excited to help our local businesses and entrepreneurs, since they are the heart of the downtown.”

As a new feature of Festive Fridays, “pop-up” or temporary retailers, nonprofits, and artists will activate vacant storefronts in downtown Allegan. This initiative, led by the League’s PlacePOP program, creates temporary improvements to inspire business development. This partnership takes Allegan’s successful placemaking efforts to the next level by drawing attention to available commercial spaces and recruiting businesses and entrepreneurs to Downtown Allegan.

“We hope Festive Friday visitors come every week to shop in the outstanding local businesses that serve Allegan. We are also excited to organize additional pop-up business and community spaces throughout downtown to further enhance the experience,” said Sarah Craft, PlacePOP program coordinator for the League. “These pop-ups will provide a variety of unique retail and entertainment experiences for the community to enjoy.”

During each Festive Friday, Allegan offers free horse-drawn wagon rides and free hot chocolate. Warming stations will be located around town, and many shops will have extended business hours. The special pop-up storefronts will be marked with a winter-themed logo and window decorations.
Featured Festive Friday events are:

  • December 4, 7-8 p.m. – Holiday parade, tree lighting in the city’s newly-renovated riverfront walk area, and the Second Street Bridge Lighting.

  • December 11, 5-8 p.m. – Downtown Art Hop. Businesses will have extended evening hours and local artists will have art on display in multiple locations.

  • December, 18, 5-8 p.m. – Downtown Stocking Hop. Visitors decorate a stocking at Hubbard and Brady St. and gather goodies from downtown businesses.
