Paw Paw Village Manager Larry Nielsen Receives Special Award of Merit from Michigan Municipal League

MARQUETTE, Michigan —The Michigan Municipal League honored Paw Paw Village Manager Larry Nielsen with a 2014 Special Award of Merit during the League’s Annual Convention on Oct. 16 in Marquette.

Nielsen has worked in a variety of roles serving Michigan municipal government since the mid-1980s and is a long-time supporter of the League and its programs. He’s been the Paw Paw Village manager since 2007 and was previously the manager in Bangor. In 2013, he agreed to help the city of Bangor by serving as its temporary manager while the community searched for a permanent manager. During this time, he simultaneously served both Paw Paw and Bangor.

Nielsen is a past member of the Michigan Municipal League Board of Trustees and a long-time member of the Michigan Local Government Management Association, which gave him the Excellence in Local Government Award earlier this year. He’s volunteered on numerous League boards and committees, including the Workers’ Compensation Fund Board, the League Finance and Taxation Committee, and the Workers’ Compensation Fund Audit Committee.

“What hasn’t Larry done for us?” said League CEO and Executive Director Dan Gilmartin. “He has spoken at League training programs whenever asked, he is a strong donor and supporter of the MML Foundation, and is always there to assist us with our legislative efforts. Plus, Larry is a character—literally and figuratively. He’s very involved in his local community theatre and can be frequently seen acting, writing, producing and directing plays.”

About the Awards of Merit: Each year, the Michigan Municipal League recognizes and honors a select few individuals with Special Awards of Merit for outstanding contributions to Michigan communities. The merit awards are given out during the League’s annual Convention.
