Holland Mayor Kurt Dykstra Receives Special Award of Merit from Michigan Municipal League

MARQUETTE, Michigan —The Michigan Municipal League honored Holland Mayor Kurt Dykstra with a 2014 Special Award of Merit during the League’s Annual Convention on Oct. 16 in Marquette.

Mayor Dykstra has been a member of the Holland City Council since 2005 and represented the city’s fifth ward until November of 2009 when he was elected as Holland’s 40th mayor. He also serves on the city’s planning commission, elections commission, and was chairperson of the city manager search committee. He is senior vice president and the Holland Community President of Mercantile Bank and previously practiced law at a large Grand Rapids-based law firm.

Dykstra has been very involved with League programs and initiatives in recent years, particularly on legislative action happening in Lansing, said Dan Gilmartin, CEO and Executive Director for the League.

“Mayor Dykstra is extraordinarily helpful when it comes to assisting the League with legislative issues,” Gilmartin said. “He has participated in multiple press conferences, testified in legislative hearings, and is a strong supporter of our placemaking work, personal property tax reform, and revenue sharing efforts.”

“He is a leader in the effective use of social media to promote and inform his community. If you follow him on Twitter or Facebook you’ll find traffic updates, storm damage updates, event updates, and more. Mayor Dykstra, mayor of the All-American city with a Dutch accent, is available to assist anytime we call on him.”

About the Awards of Merit: Each year, the Michigan Municipal League recognizes and honors a select few individuals with Special Awards of Merit for outstanding contributions to Michigan communities. The merit awards are given out during the League’s annual Convention.
