Michigan Municipal Attorneys Honor Former MAMA President Jack Beras
LANSING, Michigan (Jan. 22, 2013) —-Longtime Southfield Attorney John “Jack” Beras will be remembered for his lifetime of commitment to serving Michigan communities. Beras, who passed away January 7 following a long illness, is being honored by the Michigan Association of Municipal Attorneys (MAMA) and those who knew him.
“Jack was an excellent city attorney,” said MAMA Board President Randall L. Brown, Portage city attorney. “He also had a special political acumen. He was a Southfield city council member before he was ever city attorney, so he had a unique perspective and understanding of the city. Plus, he was a very patient and kind person. He was a mentor and role model to many of us.”
Brown said the MAMA board honored Beras Saturday, Jan. 19, 2013, during its annual winter meeting with a moment of silence and conversation about how much Beras meant to not only the attorneys’ association, but to the field of municipal law.
Beras, who was 64, served as Southfield City Attorney for 26 years where he successfully represented the city as counsel in more than 100 cases. He also served as president of the Michigan Association of Municipal Attorneys and chairperson of the Michigan Municipal League Legal Defense Fund Board of Directors.
In 2009, Beras was awarded the Distinguished Municipal Attorney of the Year by MAMA. This award is given for outstanding contributions to the practice of municipal law on behalf of cities and villages throughout Michigan, and acknowledges the highest level of professional accomplishment.
