LANSING, MICHIGAN -
The city of Bessemer earned top honors as the Michigan Municipal League’s Region 7 Community Excellence Award winner at the Michigan Municipal League 2012 Capital Conference Lansing on March 20. The region includes all communities in the Upper Peninsula.

Bessemer has worked successfully to establish an efficient and effective working relationship between the city and the Gogebic Range Water Authority to improve the area’s water distribution infrastructure.

“The atmosphere of cooperation we’ve created is an economic benefit that allows our community to get more financial aid to improve the region’s water system,” said Councilmember Douglas Olsen. “It’s also built trust for everybody to help each other, with regional economic benefits.”

Olsen accepted the award Tuesday along with City Manager Mike Uskiewicz.
Bessemer will now go on to compete against the other six regional winners for the statewide CEA at the League’s Annual Convention Oct. 3-5 on Mackinac Island.

The CEA program, affectionately called “The Race for the Cup,” was started by the League in 2007 to recognize innovative solutions taking place in Michigan’s cities, villages and urban townships.
