Municipal Attorneys Group Recognizes Southgate and Lincoln Park Attorney Ed Zelenak

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – For lifetime commitment to Michigan communities, Ed Zelenak, representing the cities of Southgate and Lincoln Park, was chosen to receive a 2009 Excellence in Municipal Law and Governance Award from the Michigan Association of Municipal Attorneys (MAMA).
The Award honors select individuals whose careers embody significant achievement in and contribution to municipal governance and to the understanding and practice of municipal law.

Southgate Mayor Norma Wurmlinger praised Mr. Zelenak for his outstanding dedication to the community and for serving the council in three different administrations. Lincoln Park Mayor Vaslo commended Mr. Zelenak for his incredible political acumen and diplomatic tact when applying the rule of law.

Among his achievements, Zelenak developed the first cost-recovery ordinance for drunk driving arrests in Michigan; innovations in the handling of the defense for certain first amendment cases in Michigan and; worked internationally to bring a touch of the United Nations to the communities he represents.

Zelenak was presented the Award during the September 28 Lincoln Park City Council meeting and the September 30 Southgate City Council meeting by Stephen Postema, Ann Arbor city attorney and MAMA president and William Mathewson, Michigan Municipal League general counsel and MAMA secretary-treasurer.
