Advocacy
With a fulltime presence at the state capital, the League advocates on behalf of its members—cities, villages and urban townships—in Lansing, Washington DC and the courts. Policy CommitteesThe League's legislative policy committees guide the organization's advocacy efforts by providing general direction and legislative policy recommendations to the board of trustees and staff on a variety of local government issues. 2007-2008 Legislative Policies (PDF) Legislative PrioritiesFunding Michigan’s Communities – Advocating for adequate state funding, revenue sharing, for communities so they can support the essential services that contribute to quality of life and make communities the types of places where people want to live and businesses want to locate. Economic Development – Refocusing economic development resources and initiatives towards investing in urban areas so communities can continue to attract talented new-economy workers and employers to Michigan. Transportation & Infrastructure – Proposing several initiatives to fund Michigan’s transportation and infrastructure systems. Environmental Protection – Promoting environmental protection and the wise use of tax dollars to enhance environmental quality. Interested MML members are offered an additional Environmental Affairs Service (EAS). Public PolicyMichigan Fiscal Responsibility Project – Providing citizens, policymakers, elected officials, and the media with accurate information about state government taxes and spending in Michigan Community Design and Education Program Center - Assists local officials in identifying, developing and implementing programs and strategies that will enhance the state’s communities as vibrant places for the 21st Century. YourMichigan Campaign – Focuses on the services — from road and recreational programs to education and public safety — local government units provide to families across the state and emphasizes the return on the dollar for taxpayers.
