Better Government Through Better Education
Since 1899, the Michigan Municipal League
(MML) has operated
on the principle that knowledge is a vital component of good
government and that knowledgeable, well-educated officials
make better decisions on every issue. In pursuit of our mission,
we have provided thousands of elected officials with the specialized
training and information needed to make wise, effective
decisions on a broad spectrum of community issues.
Over time, as the number of Michigan communities increased
and the problems confronting those communities became more
complex, the role of the MML grew larger. We were challenged
to find new ways of providing relevant, in-depth training that
was both accessible and affordable to officials throughout the
state. In 1991, MML responded to that challenge by creating a separate
non-profit Foundation. Funds generated by the Michigan
Municipal League Foundation have made it possible to:
- Expand training programs
- Explore new learning formats
- Develop computer-based educational modules
- Subsidize training and travel costs for qualified participants
- Find innovative ways to make programs accessible
to elected officials
Rising To The Challenge Once Again:
The Power Of Knowledge Campaign
Today, the MML Foundation is facing a new set of challenges.
Most Michigan communities are operating under severe budget
constraints and simply cannot afford to underwrite the cost of
training for elected officials. Most municipal officials receive
monthly stipends of less than $100, making it difficult
or impossible for them to pay tuition fees and travel costs.
Through the years, MML and its supporters have met
every challenge. Please help us meet this one by
contributing to the Power of Knowledge Campaign.
The $1 million educational endowment fund will become
a reality only if those who care about good government
step forward and respond generously. Gifts of any
amount are welcomed and needed. Because this is a
three-year campaign, pledges can be prorated and
divided into manageable annual installments.
