History and Purpose of the Foundation
Following is a brief summary of the history of the Michigan Municipal League and the Municipal League Foundation.
Michigan Municipal League
Founded in 1899, the Michigan Municipal League is the Michigan association
of cities and villages. The League is a nonpartisan organization working
through cooperative effort to strengthen the quality of municipal government
and administration by providing technical assistance and information to
local officials regarding municipal issues; improving the training and
education of these officials; preserving the home rule philosophy of municipal
government, and creating a greater public understanding of municipal responsibilities,
governance and administration.
The Michigan Municipal League was built by municipal leaders who volunteered to support a cooperative organization aimed at improving local government. The League's motto is "Cooperation solves any problem," and its history illustrates that axiom. The League has brought city and village officials together to exchange information and to speak as a collective voice for home rule.
Michigan Municipal League Foundation
The Michigan Municipal League Foundation was organized in 1991 to
enhance and develop leadership in local government. The Foundation serves
as the fundraising arm of the Michigan Municipal League and is a registered
501-(c)-(3) charitable organization. Its purpose is to raise funds for
programs of the League that are designed to:
- Initiate leadership training programs for local government officials
- Cultivate research needed for effective local government leadership
- Raise public confidence in local government through awareness and education efforts.
The vision of the Foundation is that every elected official will receive the clear, accurate, up-to-date information they need in a way that is immediately accessible to them, delivered in a variety of media they will use, and offered at a price they can afford.
