Region 2 Education Seminar Highlights
The Michigan Municipal League Region 2 Seminar, held in Allegan on April 17, 2009, was a huge success! Speaker David Worthams, League Legislative Associate, gave an update on the latest news regarding transportation funding in Michigan and also from the federal level. He discussed the current funding crisis and ways to resolve it, the League's goals for transportation, and he encouraged members to help with the situation by joining two coalitions: www.getmichiganmoving.com and www.drivemi.org.
Presenter Linda Frey of the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), West Michigan Chapter, talked about the LEED Green Building Rating System. She explained that this is an important topic because buildings have a huge impact on the environment. They tax our resources, contribute to global warming and they are where we spend as much as 90 percent of our time. With the harmonization of the LEED rating systems and an alignment of credits across the rating systems, USGBC has been able to consolidate its LEED reference guides, meaning you’ll no longer need to have a separate reference guide for every rating system.
Representatives Bob Genetski (R-Saugatuck) and Robert Jones (D-Kalamazoo) answered audience questions about current events at the Capitol. They discussed the running budget deficit and the fact that at this point, there is probably not the legislative willingness to tackle a long-term solution for structural budget problems. In addition, they discussed service sharing at the local level and being open to legislative changes needed to allow for more service sharing such as in the Urban Cooperation Act. However, neither have seen the level of discussion surrounding major restructuring or service sharing requirements as the Legislature has focused on in prior sessions.
