“Leading Local, Thinking Global” by Clarence Anthony at League Convention

At the League’s Annual Convention, October 3-5 on Mackinac Island, Clarence Anthony is scheduled to speak on “Leading Local, Thinking Global.” Clarence Anthony, mayor of South Bay, Florida, is a vocal "champion for the voiceless" in his 20 years tenure of the small city. Despite being mayor for a relatively small community, he has also emerged as a city leader of national and international standing. Mayor Anthony's accolades include the Ebony Magazine Future Leader, Outstanding Young Men in America and Outstanding Community Leaders in America awards, as well as the Florida Junior Chamber of Commerce Mayor of the Year. However, it was with his election as 75th president of the National League of Cities for 1999 (only the second from a small city) that his arrival as a city leader on the national stage arrived.

Establishing Safe and Realistic Speed Limits Webinar webinar
July 16, 10:00 am

Over the past several decades, the advancement of motor vehicle technology and enhanced roadway design has rendered the vast majority of speed limits incorrect across the country. These incorrect speed limits put motorists, police officers, and traffic safety professionals in a difficult position. Ironically, in many cases, the safest speed on any given stretch of roadway may be significantly above the posted speed limit.

The relationship between speed limits and actual travel speeds is counterintuitive and often misunderstood. This presentation will illustrate the basic engineering principles that should be used to establish a proper, enforceable speed limit. Additionally, it will highlight several examples of what occurs, and, more importantly, what doesn't occur after a speed limit is adjusted or corrected.
