Registration is open for the 2012 Annual Convention on Mackinac Island, October 3-5. This year the League is offering post-Convention workshops in an effort to help you save on additional travel costs. These workshops are available for an additional fee on Friday, October 5. Sign up when you register for Convention. If you do not plan to attend Convention but would like to attend a post-Convention workshop, you can sign up via faxable form.

Excavation Safety: Competent Person Training
July 10, 2012– Register here
This seminar is designed for those in positions of authority relating to any type of excavation work, including municipal public works directors, professional engineers, and site personnel. Attendees will be instructed in a variety of methods including a "hands-on" session with soil samples for required analysis, and view a video demonstrating protective systems to be used in excavation. Upon completion, participants will be able to conduct proper soil analysis, determine and implement the proper protective systems to use in trenches and excavations, cite OSHA Standards, and handle an actual OSHA inspection.
Confined Space Entry Training

This course is designed to educate all personnel employed in the industry, including municipal public work directors who have locations that require employees to work in "confined spaces," and for employees working in those spaces. Attendees will be taught a variety of compliance methods, and view videos demonstrating examples of consequences for violation of procedures, and planning for successful entries. After attending this session, your employees will be able to cite the current OSHA Standards and "confined space" permit requirements, recognize and assess hazards associated with confined space entry, and choose the techniques, methods, and equipment used to ensure a safe entry.
Free Webinar Showcases Mid-Michigan Sustainability Initiative

In late 2011, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development awarded the Tri-County Regional Planning Commission a $3 million grant to support the Mid-Michigan Program for Greater Sustainability, a collaborative effort involving partners from Clinton, Eaton, and Ingham Counties. This regional planning grant supports initiatives that integrate housing, land use, economic and workforce development, transportation, environmental and infrastructure investments. June 20, a Michigan Green Communities webinar will feature Harmony Gmazel, AICP, Land Use Planner with the Tri-County Regional Planning Commission and Julie Powers, Executive Director of the Mid-Michigan Environmental Action Council. Harmony and Julie will provide an overview of the grant and the region’s emerging sustainability planning efforts.

The League is pleased to announce its partnership with the Saginaw Valley State University Office of Continuing Education and Professional Development and providing the opportunity for national Certified Public Manager® certification.
This partnership is intended to provide League members with educational access to this nationally accredited program offered only through Saginaw Valley State University. The primary goal of the Michigan Certified Public Manager® program is to foster and encourage the highest possible levels of performance and ethical practice of public and nonprofit sector managers in order to effectively provide services and continuously improve the performance of state, local, and federal government and of the nonprofit sector.

Designing, Preparing and Updating Employee Handbooks

Employee handbook development can be as complex as writing a novel, requiring not only knowledge of each company policy issue but legal compliance and layout and organization. This half-day program will present ideas and information to design and prepare a company handbook as well as tips on updating an existing document.
