Bring a Colleague to Entrepreneur Training for FREE
Limited Number of Scholarships Available From CMS Energy

From Kansas to the Congo, the Sirolli Institute’s Enterprise Facilitation program is reversing Main Street mortality rates. We hope to bring that same success to local communities struggling to reinvent and revitalize their economic base, by offering the Sirolli workshop “Attracting and Retaining Entrepreneurs."

Oct. 26 – Bay de Noc Community College, Escanaba

Oct. 28 – Bay Valley Resort & Conference Center, Bay City
Oct. 29 – League Office, Lansing

Special Offer: Bring another person from your community for free, by taking advantage of a 2 for 1 scholarship, generously funded by CMS Energy Corporation. Only a limited number of scholarships are available and will be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis. In order to qualify for this scholarship, all attendee names must be submitted together using the faxable registration form. Registrations made online will not qualify.

Dennis Archer Scholarship Fund
Youth Essay Competition Submissions Due by Oct. 22!

Do you know a high school student with an interest in local government and public service? There’s still time for them to enter the 2010 Youth Essay Competition, offered through the Michigan Municipal League Foundation and the Dennis Archer Scholarship Fund.

Winners will receive an all-expenses-paid trip to the Congress of Cities in Denver, CO on Nov. 30-Dec. 4. Information on the competition has already been sent directly to Michigan Association of School Administrators for distribution to the high schools.

Elected Officials Training Basics – Coming to a Town Near You!

The League is hosting trainings throughout the state for both newly elected and seasoned officials, titled “You Won! What Now? Newly Elected Officials Training.” The trainings will run 5:30-9:00 pm, including a light dinner, and take place following November elections in the following locations:

November 4 – Midland
November 8 – Alpena
November 10 – Inkster
November 11 – Port Huron
November 15 – Battle Creek
November 16 – Wyoming

If you aren't sure how many new officials you will have, you are able to hold spots in the newly elected officials training by simply contacting Jane Bruck at jbruck@mml.org or 734-669-6312. Reservations will be held until the results of the November election are known. Following Election Day, please register your newly elected officials. If you already know which of your elected officials would like to attend, click the above link to register today!

White Paper on Medical Marijuana Now Available

A new white paper was recently released that advises communities on the controversial Michigan Medical Marihuana Act. The report, produced by consultant Gerald A. Fisher, a professor of law at the Thomas M. Cooley Law School in Auburn Hills, was prepared at the request of the Michigan Municipal League and Michigan Townships Association and is intended to assist local governments. The Michigan Municipal League has already hosted or co-sponsored numerous training sessions on the law and will continue to work with communities to assist them in interpreting and administering the act.
