Utilizing Web Technologies to Improve Communications
Throughout
the world, organizations and individuals alike are utilizing unique
and effective ways to communicate using the world wide web. These
methods are evolving the internet into a rich, “point,
click and watch” environment which will attract the attention
of your citizens and encourage greater involvement in your community.
This session will begin by discussing the differences between creating
static vs interactive communications and what this means for your
web site. Examples will be presented which will highlight municipalities
and organizations around the state and how they are taking advantage
of online technologies such as blogs, pod casts,
RSS feeds, videos and social networks.. The last portion of the seminar
will be a technical demonstration on how easy it is to create a streaming
video for your community using an inexpensive piece of software and
a simple home video camera.
At the conclusion of this session attendees will be able to:
* Describe
the benefits of using web technologies for effective citizen communication.
* Evaluate
cost-effective methods to implement web technologies.
* Create new
web communication strategies for more informed and involved citizens.

Meetings ‘R’ Us—How to Run Productive
Meetings
Do your meetings run smoothly? Is your council or board debating
issues until late into the night? By using parliamentary procedure,
you can gain control and have more productive meetings. This basic
guide to fair and orderly meeting procedures will help keep discussions
focused and allow you to accomplish the business on the agenda.
This session will focus on council meetings and all of the problems
and interruptions that can complicate them, including dealing with
difficult people. Quorums and types of motion will be explained and
demonstrated.
You will be able to identify basic principles and objectives of
parliamentary procedure, be able to recognize fair and orderly meeting
procedures, and learn how to handle motions, debates, and voting
requirements.
The session will conclude with a panel (including the speaker and
League information staff), to answer meeting questions that may fall
outside the realm of parliamentary procedure, such as with council
rules and charters. This is an interactive presentation where individual
concerns and questions will be addressed.
