GRAND RAPIDS, Michigan – (Oct. 7, 2011) Sterling Heights Mayor Richard Notte was honored by his fellow municipal leaders with the Michigan Municipal League’s Michael A. Guido Leadership and Public Service Award for 2011 during the League’s Annual Convention in Grand Rapids on Oct. 6.

As mayor of Michigan’s fourth largest city, Richard Notte has demonstrated the kind of leadership and professionalism that has placed Sterling Heights among the “Best Places to Raise a Family” in the United States, according to Best Life magazine.
A councilmember from 1983-1993, he was elected mayor in 1993 and has remained in that seat since.

Notte has testified in Lansing on many occasions on behalf of Michigan communities. He’s the small-town mayor who knows everyone, yet leads the fourth largest city like a business, emphasizing financial stability amid the state’s struggling economy.

Sault Sainte Marie Mayor Wins Award

 DEARBORN, Michigan - Sault Sainte Marie Mayor Anthony "Tony" Bosbous was honored by his fellow municipal leaders by earning the Michigan Municipal League's Michael A. Guido Leadership and Public Service Award for 2010.

Mayor Bosbous has served as mayor of Sault Sainte Marie since 2001 and served on the city commission since 1991. he has worked for the Chippewa-Luce-Mackinac Community Action Agency since 1969 and served as deputy director since 1978.

Through two decades of service to the city, Bosbous has truly been a positive force that has significantly re-shaped the city. he played a major role in establishing one of Michigan's 15 SmartZones within his community. he is a strong promoter of creating a sense of place and walkability for the city - he regularly walks the two miles between his home and work.

Bosbous is a member of numerous boards, including vice president of the Eastern Upper Peninsula Workforce Development Board; board of directors of the Lake Superior State University Foundation, past president and member of the Sault Sainte Marie Lions Club, and a founding board member for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Sault Sainte Marie.

Holland Mayor Honored

Mayor Albert “Al” McGeehan has been an active advocate for healthy communities—not only at home, but in Lansing and beyond. Al was first elected to city council in 1977 where he served four "four-year" terms as a councilman-at-large. He is now in his eighth term as mayor of the city of Holland. In addition to his long service to the city, he also has five decades of teaching experience, including serving as chair of the social studies department for the Holland Public Schools. Al has served on several League and National League of Cities committees. For three years he represented the League as the West Michigan Regional Coordinator. From 2006 to 2008, Al served consecutive terms as president of the Michigan Association of Mayors. He has been active in numerous efforts across Michigan’s west coast, including the United Way, the March of Dimes, and Leadership West Michigan.

2008 Award Honors Huntington Woods Mayor

 The League's first annual Michael A. Guido Leadership and Public Service Award was presented last year to Huntington Woods Mayor Ronald F. Gillham for his outstanding public service to Michigan communities.

 Created in memory of Dearborn Mayor Michael A. Guido, the peer-nominated honor celebrates a chief elected official who personifies professionalism and leadership, is dedicated to the citizens in their community and advocates on their behalf in Lansing and Washington, D.C.

"As one of Michigan’s longest serving mayors, Mayor Gillham embodies the passion, professionalism and leadership of Michael A. Guido and is a most fitting recipient of the first annual award," said Deborah Doyle, 2007 League president.
