Revenue Sharing Cuts Likely Averted!

Last week, the House of Representatives passed legislation that will likely prevent drastic revenue sharing cuts. The Granholm Administration has proposed a comprehensive budget solution that will close the budget hole for the current 2009-2010 budget, and will eliminate the deficit expected for the 2010-1011budget. These budget recommendations were sent to the Legislature. Indications were made to League staff that if these recommendations were not approved, the governor would be forced to do an executive order that would include eliminating the August revenue sharing payment (approximately $120 million to communities). State Affairs Update

Bills to Eliminate Fire Protection Grants Pulled from House Agenda – Last week, shortly before session began, the House added two bills, HBs 4098 and 5603 to the agenda. These bills would repeal the driver responsibility fees resulting in elimination of fire protection grant money. League lobbyists immediately sprang into action contacting our members who rely on fire protection grants to run successful fire departments and talking to legislators in the lobby as session went on through the afternoon. Michigan Awarded Broadband Funding – Michigan has received funding from the federal government as part of investments in 94 broadband projects in 37 states funded through the Recovery Act. The total investment of $1.8 billion, is part of a nearly $7 billion Recovery Act initiative. MORE>
