Make a Point at PA 312 and Urban Cooperation Act Hearing
Last
week, the Senate Restructuring and Reforms Committee listened
to two hours of testimony from local government officials
on PA 312 and the Urban Cooperation Act. League members made
a great showing as mayors and managers met in Lansing to talk
to the committee about including a definition of ability to
pay and internal comparables in PA 312 and removing key barriers
from the Urban Cooperation Act. All of the League representatives
were right on message to urge the legislators to do REAL reform,
not the bills as introduced. MORE>

Majority Leader Presents Reform Plan to Michigan Municipal
League Board - Local government officials last week (Friday, Jan. 29, 2010)
urged Michigan Senate Majority Leader Mike Bishop, R-Rochester,
to strengthen the reforms he has proposed to Public Act (PA)
312, which is the state law that governs police and fire contracts.
In a meeting in Lansing with the Michigan Municipal League
Board of Trustees, Bishop said the Senate is proposing 10
reforms that will "stop out-of-control spending,"
including amendments to changes to PA 312 that will speed
up the arbitration process during contract negotiations. MORE>

"Let’s Talk Transportation" at Capital Conference, April 13-14
With a new federal transportation funding bill being debated in Washington, communities that are collaborating together on multi-modal transportation plans need additional funding incentives. The establishment of the "Sustainable Communities Partnership" between USDOT, HUD and EPA represents a significant shift among federal agencies as to how transportation works in concert with land use, housing, community development and the environment. Come listen as to how this shift in policy will impact communities and transportation funding into the future. More>
