Yesterday afternoon the Senate approved HB 5002, a bill that makes major changes to the state's workers' compensation statute.

In committee Sen. Mark Jansen sponsored an amendment to exempt police officers and firefighters from the changed wage earning capacity standards, and that amendment was adopted.

The bill makes major changes to the statute including reducing the number of days an injured worker has to see their employer's physician and requiring an injury to be "medically distinguishable" from a previous condition.

The Senate passed the legislation 20-16 six Repubilcan members voting to oppose.  The House will now vote to approve the Senate's changes.
