Following through on a campaign promise to give higher priority to those issues impacting cities, President Obama yesterday named Adolfo Carrion as his White House Director of Urban Affairs and Derek Douglas as special assistant to the President for urban affairs.
Carrion, who is currently President of the New York City Borough of the Bronx, will report directly to the President. The purpose, the President was
quoted as saying is "to bring long overdue attention to the urban areas where 80% of the American people live and work." Of course there are skeptics, for without an actual urban policy, the rest is simply window dressing. But, it's early in the game and the fact that the President is from a major American city gives one hope that after wandering in the dark for more than a generation, the federal government will devise a strategy to maximize the the economic strengths of our cities.
