If you've been following the money trail for high-speed rail projects, you know that Michigan has received a small portion to make improvements along the Detroit-Chicago corridor. Unfortunately, because of inaction, we've wasted a new opportunity to acquire even more funds.
With the election in November, new governor's were elected in Wisconsin and Ohio who, even before being sworn into office, indicated publicly that they would not accept high-speed rail money their states were to receive under the Recovery Act. Other states around the country who immediately jumped in to ensure their place in line have now been awarded those these extra funds, $1.195 billion.
If Michigan is serious about attracting and retaining all those young, talented people to invigorate our economy, here's hoping the incoming governor and legislature understand that upgrading our transportation network to reflect the 21st century is an imperative.
