Today I listened to interesting testimony in the House Intergovernmental and Regional Affairs Committee regarding the creation of fire authorities. In the testimony, Plante Moran said that in the formation of fire authorities throughout the state (or attempted formation in some cases) firefighters have always been very cooperative and never stand in the way. The real problem, according to this testimony, is the length of time it takes to create authorities and the turnover of local elected officials and managers. I was a bit surprised by this testimony and disappointed that it didn't focus on some other issues like the Urban Cooperation Act. We'll see what happens as this issue continues to be discussed in Lansing.
