Walkability expert Dan Burden is in Michigan this week (February 8-12, 2010) to work with the Michigan Municipal League and several Michigan communities. Burden conducts walking audits of communities and explains how having a pedestrian-friendly community can improve the overall economic stability of the area. The League joined him and about 15 Lapeer City officials Tuesday, Feb. 9 as they braved the snow to learn how to make the community better. Burden loved the area's extensive walking and biking trails and its historic buildings and appeal, but he did make several recommendations on how to make the city even better. City leaders said they will take his information and consider it when deciding how to best use existing grant dollars and future dollars. Burden also will speak to MML members and others during a workshop Friday, Feb. 12 in Lansing. To register for Friday's event go here.
