The debate over how long to extend current federal transportation laws continues in Congress.  Recent plans for a six-month extension were set aside in favor of a continuing resolution that keeps funding going through December 18.  Long term prospects on where this debate will be headed remain unclear with the House favoring a three-month extension and the Senate wanting 18 months to give more time to develop a new comprehensive transportation program.  Like our federal partners, the League favors a long term extension in order to give time for all parties to work out a new comprehensive transportation program that provides greater local authority and decision making over transportation programs, ensures equity and connectivity among transportation programs, provides adequate and sustainable funding, a streamlined regulatory review process and is based on the principles of sustainability.
