As the Super Committee on Deficit Reduction continues its work, so does the rest of the Congress on moving forward with FY 2012 budget bills. Currently of importance to Michigan communities is debate surrounding the transportation budget currently before the Senate.
Two issues of importance are under attack - funding for Amtrak and funding for transportation enhancements.
Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky is proposing a amendment that would eliminate approximately $700 million in federal funding for FY2012 that is used to construct sidewalks, bike lanes, bike paths, trails and other infrastructure that makes it safe for bicyclists and pedestrians to get around. The TE program program represents less than two percent of the Federal transportation program and these projects help alleviate traffic congestion, improve safety, get people active, and create more jobs per dollar than highway-only projects.
Regarding Amtrak funding, the House passed version of this budget eliminated funds that states use to support Amtrak routes. If that makes it through, it is likely that Amtrak routes in Michigan will have to close as the state of Michigan will be unable to make up for the loss in federal dollars.
Members are strongly encouraged to contact Senators Levin and Stabenow and tell them to oppose the Paul amendment or any other amendments that would strip away funding for transportation enhancements and to continue to support funding for Amtrak.
